Peru gets ready for golf festival

Lima will host a worldwide golf festival in January. Many of the best amateur players from all over the world will arrive to take part in one of the most important golf tournaments of our region: the X South American Amateur Golf Championship, to be held from January 22nd to 25th, 2015 at the Lima Golf Club in Lima, Peru. Future world golf stars will be competing to see who the champion is in this South American tournament.

Players from the entire region, the United States, Great Britain and other countries will take part in this event.

This competition is one of the most important at an amateur level and has the support of Scotland’s R&A, an entity that promotes the development of golf worldwide. Thus, it places Peru in a privileged spot in worldwide golf as a host country for this important event. In addition, for the first time, the United States Golf Association (USGA) will be sending an official delegation that will take part in this prestigious championship.

The best amateur golf players from Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Canada, Scotland, the United States, Finland, Wales, England, Ireland and Portugal will take part in this event. The game has been scheduled for 72 holes, stroke play, and no qualifying cuts. It is worth mentioning that thanks to the development program being carried out by the Peruvian Golf Federation, two students from the San Bartolo Public School will be representing Peru in this Championship.

In the men’s category, Argentina has 6 titles thanks to the victories of Tommy Cocha (on two occasions), Sebastian Saavedra, Jorge Fernandez Valdés, Franco Romero and Esteban Martinez. In the women’s category, there is a tie between Colombians Paola Moreno, Maria Yacaman and Luciana Murcia and Argentinians Martina Gavier, Manuela Carbajo Re and Delfina Acosta with three victories for each team. On the other hand, Lucia Gutiérrez won the only championship for Peru in Barranquilla last year.

The event is being organized by the Peruvian Golf Federation with support from the R&A, the South American Golf Federation and the Lima Golf Club, which has one of the best golf courses in the region and that will be hosting this important competition for the second time
